THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD IN SECOND GRADE AT CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP SCHOOL IN DU QUOIN

(Written by Second Grade Teacher, Sarah Melvin)

Our Bible class takes first place in our day. We study through many Old and New Testament books with the use of pictures and lively discussions . We follow up and reinforce the Bible lessons by requiring verse memorization and Bible lesson quizzes. The Bible verse memorization also keeps their minds sharp and stresses the importance of reading and applying God’s Word to their young lives and hiding His Word in their hearts.

Second grade spends a lot of time on phonics and math methods. We also get prepared for reading to learn by learning to read well. In math we learn our multiplication and division methods and begin basic problems by year's end.

Spelling takes center stage and the children learn to use their phonics skills in spelling “bees” and sounding out difficult dictionary words by applying the sounds they’ve learned from our phonics charts. We also learn alphabetical order as a part of phonics and spelling.

History, Science, and Health, Safety, and Manners are used to develop more reading and comprehension skills while applying these subjects to their lives through map skills, simple experiments, and daily life-directing discussions or exercises.

Penmanship is a class by itself, but is stressed throughout the day in all written paperwork. Quality in even the smallest details, such as writing , expresses to the students that excellence in all things is what is important to the Lord and to the staff and faculty of the school.

Other subjects and activities that they love are computer class, library, art,and of course, their favorite activity, recess.
